“Etwall Leisure Centre is a vibrant place. We share the facilities with John Port School – the largest secondary school in Derbyshire. The school site has an interesting history, once a country manor (Etwall Hall), and used by the Army in the Second World War as a petrol depot and equipment supply centre.
The original swimming pool closed to the public in June 2009 and the new £6.7m building was opened by former Olympic badminton player (European and Commonwealth gold medalist), Donna Kellogg.
Interestingly, the original pool tank was drained – the building converted – and now sits beneath the school’s new ‘Flexible Learning Centre’, providing classroom and workshop space for many new courses. We were also fascinated to learn that the village of Etwall dates from the seventh century AD – ‘Etewelle’ was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 …. we wonder how the local land was being used then?
What we do know is that the centre’s swimming pool is used by Derventio eXcel (Derbyshire’s elite performance swimming squad, with national and international swimmers of all age groups) and that its’ main sports hall was used by the Australian and Canadian Badminton Teams for their pre-Olympic 2012 Games preparation: something we are very proud to have hosted.
As a popular activity ‘hub’ for the village and surrounding areas, we are supported by a broad range of service users, including young families and local community sports clubs. Keen to be ‘the place’ where you learn how to play, or to get better at, your preferred sport, we also provide all kinds of opportunities to start and stay exercising.

The Australian Badminton Team are holding a training camp in South Derbyshire in the lead up to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Coaching Derbyshire has organised an event for coaches and business people in the county who are interested in Badminton Australia’s coaching and competition ethos.
