Work is about to begin on the £100,000 revamp of the changing areas at The Quays Swimming and Diving complex.
Following all of the brilliant feedback from supporters we are really excited to start the transformation that will bring them the improved changing facilities they have asked for.
The refurbishment will start next week and will see the venue’s changing rooms fitted with new showers, tiles, more cubicles in the family change, new bench seating and new sinks, taps and vanity units. New doors will also revamp the main entrance.
We apologise as there will be some disruption in these areas, however, we will be phasing the works to keep any inconvenience to a minimum – ensuring there are always alternative changing areas to use.
During this time our pools, studios and gym will run as normal – meaning that you won’t have to miss any of your favourite workouts, classes, swims or activities.
Information will be displayed and available from reception about what areas are closed each day and what alternative areas to use. So please just ask if you are unsure.
We really do appreciate your ongoing support and co-operation and promise the end result really will be worth it.
Coinciding with the launch of the refurbishment, we will be installing new lockers – starting in the male changing room, followed by the female and then the families.
These will have a new padlock security mechanism. Padlocks will be available to buy and borrow using a simply deposit and return system from reception. Supporters can also bring in their own – however we would recommend a combination padlock to save you the hassle of having to carry a key.
For more information please ask during your next visit, our team are really looking forward to the changes and would love to tell you all about them.

]]>
Olympic swimmer Sophie Allen has returned to the Active Nation venue where she used to train as a teenager – in a bid to inspire the next generation of young swimmers.
As part of our brilliant discovery weekend Sophie visited Yarborough Leisure Centre in Lincoln where she coached the team and young swimmers from across the city.
She said: “By the time I was 23 years old, I had the opportunity to travel the world – Japan, China, Singapore, Dubai, Doha, America and most of Europe. I never ever thought that swimming would give me that kind of an opportunity. Sport really can open so many doors – you just have to go out there and go for it!”
The 20 young swimmers also got the chance to handle Sophie’s European Championships bronze medal, her European Championships silver medal and her World Cup medal. She also spoke about learning to swim, her road to London 2012, meeting the Queen, making sacrifices and dealing with disappointment and injury during her career.
As a young swimmer Sophie was a member of the Lincoln Vulcans Swimming Club and used to train twice a week at Yarborough Leisure Centre.
She added: “It’s pretty cool to be back and to see that it is still really busy. I think events like the Active Nation Discovery Weekends are amazing.
“There has been a big thing about how participation in swimming nationally has been declining and events like these can only benefit everyone and the sport.
“It is so important to keep people swimming, not just for sport and exercise, but also because it is an important life skill that you can take with you anywhere. It enables you to have fun in the sea and pools when you are on holiday and it can also save lives. It is just so important.
“I think it is great that Active Nation is helping people to get into the pool and all these other activities too.”
Active Nation’s Donna Taylor said: “It was great to welcome Sophie back to Yarborough Leisure Centre. All of the young swimmers were brilliant and got so much out of the coaching session – and so did our swim team too!”
One parent said: “Thank you so much. This really was brilliant and something they will all remember for the rest of their lives!”
One swimmer who also attends Yarborough Leisure Centre’s Swim School added: “Sophie was amazing. I’m definitely going to keep up with my swimming and use all of the techniques she taught us.”
Our next Discovery Weekend will take place on April 9th/10th – watch this space for more info!

Dozens of toys from The Disney Store were delivered to Southampton General Hospital children’s ward by the Active Nation team – including mascots Captain Quays, Chambers the cat and Tickles the tiger.
This is the 3rd year Active Nation have teamed up with In Kind Direct, an organisation set up to re-distribute goods from companies to charities.
The donation was made possible thanks to The Disney Store’s partnership with In Kind Direct for their annual Disney ‘From Our Family to Yours’ campaign, and was part of a total of 10,000 toys distributed by In Kind Direct to hundreds of charities in the UK, bringing Christmas joy to thousands of children.
The Active Nation team couldn’t wait to return to the children’s ward and help bring a bit of joy and smiles to the faces of 64 youngsters.
Active Nation’s Max Bradbury-Knight, who was happy to be part of the delivery team, said: “We are delighted to be part of this wonderful partnership. It was a huge privilege to be able to visit these brave and brilliant youngsters.
“It really reminds you in an instant about what really is important – not only at Christmas, but throughout the year.
“Thank you so much to The Disney Store and In Kind Direct for making this possible and for allowing us to be involved again this year. By working together over the years we have helped to brighten up Christmas for more than 200 poorly children.
“This has been such a humbling experience and something that will stay with all of us for a very long time.”

Right now around 400million people around the world are living with Diabetes, a figure that is expected to soar to almost £600million by 2035. We all need to act now to stop the 5million annual deaths already caused by this disease from escalating further!
Research shows that healthy lifestyles can prevent up to 70% of Type 2 Diabetes. With 3.2million people in the UK living with the disease, by getting active and eating healthily we can have a huge impact and reduce the risk of Diabetes.
This is one of the many reasons why Active Nation has just launched Active Nutrition – a comprehensive service designed to help you eat right and get the very best out of your exercise routine. The advice, recipes and healthy eating programme on offer, works perfectly alongside our mission to persuade the nation to be active.
TV chef Jamie Oliver is backing this year’s International Diabetes Federation campaign. He said: ““Obesity more often than not leads to lifestyle related diseases like type 2 diabetes which can increase the risk of developing a number of serious health problems and decrease life expectancy.
“But obesity is preventable and I believe that by educating our children about food and where it comes from and how to cook it and how to shop, we can turn the tide on the obesity epidemic that affects most of the world in 2015.”
But eating healthily isn’t enough – we all need to get active and move more! Those living with diabetes are encouraged to exercise regularly for better blood sugar control and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Frequent and regular exercise is recommended for everyone – all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness levels – as it boosts the immune system and helps protect against conditions such as heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes, cancer and other major illnesses.
In fact, exercise is known to cut your risk of major chronic illnesses by up to 50% and reduce your risk of early death by up to 30%. As we keep saying ‘if exercise was a pill we’d all be taking it!’
But who needs medicine when we can all have a brilliant time and go for a swim, join in a class, workout in a gym, play on a court or go for a ride – let’s all do something brilliant this Saturday and get moving for World Diabetes Day!
Give your nearest venue a call to see how you can get involved and visit www.activenation.org.uk/active-nutrition/ for more information about Active Nutrition.

The money will be used to transform the venue’s changing rooms with new showers, tiles, more cubicles in the family change, new bench seating, new locker mechanisms and new sinks, taps and vanity units. New doors will also revamp the main entrance area.
Active Nation’s Southampton Business Manager Matt Wale said: “We are all so proud of The Quays’ reputation as one of the country’s top pools and it’s important that as a charity we invest in its continued improvement.
“In recent years we have focussed a lot of our resources on the pool area and transforming our action packed gym with all its top of the range kit. Following the success of these works we can now concentrate on the areas our supporters have said they would like to see improved.
“We would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to pass on their feedback, we have listened and are pleased and excited that we are about to give them the changing rooms they have asked for and deserve.”
Works on the venue, which is managed by the charity on behalf of Southampton City Council, are likely to start in the New Year. We will keep everyone informed via email, at reception, on our website and Facebook page.
Any disruption will be kept to a minimum as we will be scheduling the works one changing room at a time – enabling us to keep all pools, classes and activities running throughout the transformation.
Matt added: “This investment by Active Nation has only been possible thanks to our brilliant supporters, so thank you to everyone.”
For more information please feel free to talk to the team during your next visit to The Quays – we’d love to tell you all about it!
